Big Mahalo to Kokua Festival Attendees, Volunteers, Performers and Supporters!
April 24, 2008
The 2008 Kokua Festival was a huge success. Everyone enjoyed the sensational music and activities. The Kokua Booth Village was a buzz with people learning and sharing the latest ideas in how to be green. We are especially excited about the interest and participation our attendees and fans took in all our greening measures, especially with the Earthday Resolutions and Kokua Festival Passports. Fans that weren't able to be inside the venue, still had the opportunity to hear the music from the surrounding park and make their Earthday Resolutions as well. Keep an eye on the Kokua Hawaii Foundation website to gage the impact we made together.
Mahalo nui loa for another amazing year!

DAVE MATTHEWS JOINS JACK JOHNSON AT THE FIFTH ANNUAL KOKUA FESTIVAL
February 04, 2008APRIL 19th- 20th • WAIKIKI SHELL • OAHU
Hawaii’s own Jack Johnson is proud to share the stage with Dave Matthews at the Fifth Annual Kokua Festival on Earth Day weekend – April 19th and 20th, 2008 – at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu, Hawaii. For his first Hawaii appearance ever, Dave Matthews will be performing an acoustic set with guitar master Tim Reynolds. The festival’s incredible music line-up will be rounded out with local island favorites Paula Fuga and Go Jimmy Go, and Brushfire Records’ latest addition, the Hawaii-born, Minneapolis-based Mason Jennings.

All proceeds go to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Jack and Kim Johnson to support environmental education programs in the schools and communities of Hawaii. The funds raised from the Kokua Festival will be used to further support school recycling on Oahu, sponsor field trips, and roll out the new farm-to-school program AINA In Schools. The foundation is excited to be expanding its community outreach with a sustainability film series and the new Plastic Free Haleiwa coalition.
In celebration of the Kokua Hawaii Foundation and Kokua Festival’s 5th anniversary, two new projects have been added to inspire environmental action among Hawaii’s students. School groups completing outstanding Kokua Earth Action Projects (KEAP) this school year have been invited to the Keiki Kokua Festival. This keiki (children) only celebration will recognize student efforts to malama (care for) our islands with entertainment by Jack Johnson and other Kokua Festival artists, educational skits, videos and exchanges from participating KEAP school groups.
In addition to the eclectic mix of live music, the Kokua Village lets fans experience eco-friendly clothing from Patagonia, sustainable shoes from Simple Shoes, and organic yogurt from Stonyfield Farm. Kokua Festival attendees can try local food and beverages, learn about products and services from green companies, view alternative energy demonstrations, participate in interactive games and crafts for the kids, and get information about environmentally active groups from around the islands.
The Kokua Festival has raised the bar on environmentally friendly concert production both locally and globally. Some of the innovative greening measures include:
The Kokua Festival concert and behind-the-scenes footage will be broadcast live with a major online partner, and an hour long special will be made for television.
Tickets are $40 for general admission/lawn, $50 for reserved seats, $125 in the seated pit area, and $20 general admission for children 3-12. Children under 3 are free. New this year, online ticket purchasers will have the option to add on $2 to offset their own personal travel to the show.
Tickets to the general public will be available at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at Ticketmaster or by phone at (877) 750-4400 on February 16th. Starting February 4th, STAR 101.9 listeners will be offered pre-sale opportunities.
The Kokua Hawaii Foundation thanks Presenting Partners Patagonia, Simple, and Stonyfield Farm; Platinum Partners Bonterra / Fetzer Organic Wines, Brushfire Records, Kashi, Kona Brewing Company, MapCargo, and Toyota Prius Hawaii; and Keiki Partners Bear Naked Granola, FruitaBu Organic Smooshed Fruit, Hawaiian Electric Company, SIGG, and Stretch Island Fruit, as well as many other like-minded companies and organizations for their support! Another Amazing Kokua Festival!
July 07, 2007
Another great year of Kokua Festival has come and gone! The 2007 Festival was the most memorable year yet on many levels, but one of the most important to us was the success of the environmental initiatives put into place at this year’s event. Thanks to the efforts of those of you in attendance at the show(s), we are proud to announce that the 2007 Kokua Festival was deemed by Waikiki Shell staff as the “cleanest” event that’s ever taken place there. A huge MAHALO to all for this wonderful accomplishment!
Many of you in attendance at the show(s) were able to create your own Earth Day Resolutions at the MySpace booth in the Kokua Village, and we encourage you to follow through on those resolutions. Check out the Kokua Festival website to view sample clips of some of the Earth Day Resolutions that were made at this year’s event. Additionally, a number of actions were taken to make the 2007 Kokua Festival the greenest event possible, including:
Zero-Waste Stations – Recycling and composting stations were located throughout the festival grounds. All food waste was donated to a local farm to be used as pig feed. Recycling totals for the event included: 4,676 aluminum cans (148 pounds), 2,450 plastic bottles (140 pounds), and 3,270 glass bottles (1,422 pounds.) All recycling proceeds were donated to the Kamehameha Treehuggers Club to use in their environmental volunteer work.
Water Stations – Attendees were able to bring their own reusable water bottle (or purchase special edition Kokua Festival water bottles onsite) and fill up for free at the water stations located around the Festival grounds. We did not anticipate how popular this offering would be – next year we’ll provide even more water to ensure it lasts through the night!
Eco-Friendly Concert Merchandise – Festival t-shirts were printed on organic cotton, concert posters were printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper, and Kokua Festival tote bags were made of sustainable materials.
Biodiesel Usage – Production vehicles and generators used at the event were powered by biodiesel fuel. Additionally, several booth vendors drove to the event in biodiesel vehicles.
Kokua Village – Green companies, products, and services provided information and samples to concert attendees. The Keiki Area, with interactive kid-friendly crafts and games, live entertainment, and surprise performances by Jack Johnson and friends, was the place to be for the little ones.
Locally-Grown, Organic & Natural Concessions and Catering – A wide selection of delicious food & drink – healthy for both body and planet – was available to attendees, artists, and crew.
Event Transportation – Bike valet parking and electric concert shuttles were a low-impact way to get concert-goers to the event. The bike valet was a successful new addition in 2007 – special thanks to the Hawai’i Bicycling League for their hard work to help make it happen.
CO2 Offsets & Climate-Neutral Certification – All festival CO2 emissions are being calculated and offset through assisting with renewable energy programs in Hawai’i, allowing the entire festival to be certified climate-neutral.
1% For The Planet – An alliance of businesses committed to leveraging their resources to create a healthier planet, members of 1% For The Planet donate at least 1% of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations worldwide. Jack Johnson has been a member of 1% For The Planet since 2003.
But it’s about more than just one weekend. It’s about remembering that every day is Earth Day and striving to make positive environmental changes, no matter how small, throughout the year. So, whatever your own personal resolution may be – whether it’s bringing re-useable bags when shopping or riding your bike to work more often – don’t lose sight of it! Together, we can make a difference. Please see the Kokua Hawai’i Foundation website for more ways you can help the environment.
Thanks again for your support of the Kokua Festival and the Kokua Hawai’i Foundation – see you in April 2008 at the 5th Annual Kokua Festival! In the meantime, be sure to check out a special performance by Jack Johnson this Saturday 7.7.07 in Sydney, Australia as part of the Live Earth Concerts for a Climate in Crisis.
Mahalo,
The Kokua Festival and Kokua Hawai’i Foundation crew
