The 2010 Kokua Festival features the Kokua Festival passport, a guide and keepsake for the event. The passport encourages festival attendees to take various actions, such as visiting eco-business or non-profit booths in the Kokua Village; refilling water bottles at the water station; and utilizing the zero-waste stations throughout the festival grounds. Each action will be rewarded with a stamp in the passport. Once three stamps are collected, the attendee can turn in the entry form in the back of the passport to be entered to win great prizes, including a pair of orchestra pit seats for that night’s show!
Jack Johnson and all parties involved in producing the Kokua Festival are committed to environmental sustainability. The goal is for the 2010 Festival to be a zero-waste, carbon-neutral event; therefore, the following actions are being taken to help reduce the environmental impact of the Kokua Festival:
Zero-Waste Stations – There will be zero-waste collection stations located throughout the festival grounds – at each station; recyclables, food waste and compostables will be separated by student volunteers from local school groups. Kamehameha Treehuggers, Kahuku, Mid-Pac’s and Punahou, environmental clubs will be monitoring the stations to educate the attendees and ensure proper disposal of all waste. Recycling assistance provided by Reynolds Recycling.
Water Stations – Fans are encouraged to bring their own empty reusable water bottles to the Festival – bottles can be filled for free at the Menehune Water Company water station located in the Kokua Village. There will also be special edition Kokua Festival EcoUsable water bottle available for purchase inside the gates.
Eco-Friendly Concert Merchandise – Festival t-shirts are made from organic cotton, and Festival concert posters are printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper. Re-usable Kokua Festival bags will also be sold. Fans are encouraged to use these reusable bags at their local grocery stores instead of paper or plastic. Graphic design and printing for Festival merchandise provided by Lively & Sons, King Graphics and Meridian Graphics.
Biodiesel – Production vehicles and generators used at the Kokua Festival will run on sustainable, locally produced biodiesel fuel courtesy of Pacific Biodiesel.
Kokua Village – While at the Kokua Festival, fans can visit the Kokua Village to purchase local food and beverage items; learn more about products and services from green companies such as Kashi, Patagonia, and Stonyfield Farm; watch alternative energy demonstrations; and get information from environmentally active groups from around the islands.
Locally-Grown, Organic & Natural Concessions and Catering – A variety of locally-grown, organic and natural food and beverage items will be available for fans to purchase at the festival. Click here for a list of local food vendors. The festival catering crew is committed to providing the artists, crew, and VIP hospitality areas with local, organic, and natural products.
Sustainable Food Ware – Thanks to the cooperation of Centerplate , Ginniberries ,and our local food vendors, the entire venue will be using sustainable food wares from Styrophobia. All cups, containers, serving dishes, utensils, and napkins will be biodegradable, recyclable, and/or re-usable.
Local Travel – We strongly encourage all attendees to utilize alternative methods of transportation to get to the Kokua Festival: biking, walking, utilizing public transportation, or driving a hybrid or biodiesel vehicle are all great ways to get to the show. Parking options for the Festival on Friday, April 23rd TBA. The Kokua Festival has arranged for free parking at the Kapiolani Community College, along with free electric shuttles that will be running from 2pm to 11pm on Saturday, April 24th. Please carpool if you are driving to the show!
The Bike Valet – For those who choose to bike to the show, free bike parking and valet service will be provided at the front of the venue. All fans whom bike to the show will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a number of prizes.
CO2 Offsets – The Kokua Festival will offer online ticket buyers the opportunity to purchase an additional $2 carbon credit to offset the emissions generated by their travel to the Festival. Pacific Biodiesel , a Kokua Festival greening partner, will use the carbon credits to displace petroleum in the Maui Electric Company plant with locally produced sustainable biodiesel. If you are flying into Hawaii for the Kokua Festival, we encourage you to consider making your entire trip carbon-neutral via additional offsets; visit Native Energy to learn more.
Climate-Neutral Certification – After all possible actions have been taken to reduce the environmental impact of the Kokua Festival, the remaining CO2 emissions will be calculated and offset via the purchase of additional carbon credits from Maui Electric Company. Once this has been done, the entire Festival will be certified climate-neutral.
Earth Day Resolutions – Onsite at Kokua Festival, fans will be given the opportunity to pledge to reduce their environmental impact throughout the year. Make your own Earth Day Resolution NOW by clicking on the following link: http://www.kokuahawaiifoundation.org/resolutions/.
